I've grown up with websites being for both displaying stuff and socializing, and IMs just being their own thing alongside that.  It seems nowadays Discord is starting to entirely replace the social aspect of websites.  This may be a good thing due to the actually-moderated nature of Discord servers, but that doesn't make it easy to get used to.

Plus there's still the fact that I usually find those servers through websites in the first place, and like... how else am I supposed to have any fucking idea whether or not the server will be any good before I join?

I see Discord servers as, like, the chat rooms or IRC servers of old. But I get the frustration, because it's hard to find discord servers, and you can't take a peek at what the community is like before you join (though you couldn't really do that with chatrooms either). But at least chat rooms had, like, a hub, either through AOL or Yahoo or w/e where you could see a list of rooms available. Sometimes subreddits have their own discord servers that anyone, presumably, can join. Maybe find some subreddits for things you're interested in, and see if they have a community discord?
